Why do some of the playthings in Part 1 not have any letters or words in them?

Introducing playthings and books without words allows your child to hear the sounds each word makes—an important first step in learning how to read. Even though they may not be able to identify the sound of each individual letter yet, this practice will help build phonemic awareness. Your child will feel more confident manipulating sounds and eventually reading and spelling words once they’ve mastered the foundational skills of Part 1.
