Why is it important for young children to learn about emotions?

By age 2, children begin to experience more complex emotions, and tantrums are a normal part of development. They’re still learning self-control and don’t yet have the words to name their feelings. Before they can manage emotions, they need to recognize and name them. Learning early helps children understand what each emotion looks and feels like, know that all emotions are okay and will pass, and practice simple strategies to calm and connect with others—building self-regulation and stronger relationships as they grow. As they become more familiar with emotions, cues, and strategies, they gain independence in managing big feelings.
